The Purpose of The Institute of Road Transport Engineers

The purpose of the IRTE Industrial Membership Scheme is to develop a mutually beneficial relationship between the Institute and Southern African companies within the road transport industry which will further the achievements of the Institute's aims.

The IRTE's aims — spanning education and training, professional ethics, safety and the environmental — benefit society as a whole. While the Institute frequently comments on proposed legislation, for example, it does so from an engineering rather than a commercial perspective.

Aims of The Institute of Road Transport Engineers

  • To improve the technical, commercial and management skill, knowledge and competence of all whose occupation
or vocation is concerned with the design, production, operation and maintenance of road vehicles of all types
used for the carriage of persons, passengers, goods and equipment.

  • To promote improvements in the design, construction and use of all types of road transport vehicles, including
components, so as to facilitate inspection, maintenance and acceptable environmental standards with safe and
    economic operation.

  • To encourage the training of people to acquire theoretical and practical qualifications, levels of competence,
and to raise the professional standard of all the members.

  • To publicise the occupation of Road Transport Engineers and promote the services offered.

  • To introduce proposals for sound legislation in all these matters.
